Since moving here 3 months ago - “here” being Lewis County, Tennessee just south of Hampshire - I’ve been putting up hummingbird feeders. First one, then a second one because so many seemed to be fighting over the one, then two more. Ruby-throated males perch on the hangers and chase away other birds coming in for a snack. Often I’ll watch the one who’s laid claim to a feeder fly off after an interloper while another buzzes in for a drink. Our German Shepherd puppy (well, 20 months) watches them through a glass door on our deck and often the birds will fly down to look at HIM. They’re getting used to me being out there. If I sit real still or stand near a feeder sometimes they’ll come investigate, coming within inches of my face. I’ve been coming down here for years (we bought the place in 2015) and would occasionally think I was being buzzed by a hornet or carpenter bee. Now I know it was hummingbirds. There’s about a half dozen and more frequenting our feeders. I have four up and go through about a gallon of nectar every 4-5 days. I’ll have to pay attention to their migratory patterns and put nectar out for them when they return.

I live in Summitville/Morrison in Northern Coffee County, TN. It is a farming community in an area rich in the nursery business. My wife was diagnosed with dementia 11 years ago and we moved here a year ago for the peace and quiet. I put out two feeders for her to watch the Hummingbirds and I got the responsibility of tending them. I have never been so amazed in my life! They have actually come to know me and will come to me when I'm outside. What awesome creatures!

Hummingbirds are not arriving in N.E.Tennessee this year. We are seeing very little to no sightings by many bird watches. We are concerned about the air quality affecting their lives given the areas they travel.
